ONI Special Advisory: Red Sea
Please be advised:
A merchant ship reported coming under fire on 21 June 2010 at 1359 UTC while underway at 13 32.7N 042 59.1E in the Red Sea approximately 20NM northwest of Mokha, Yemen. The vessel reported being fired upon by two skiffs with four individuals on one skiff and six on the other. Several bullets struck the superstructure of the vessel, but no casualties were reported. This area will remain high risk for the next 24-48 hours as weather conditions remain conducive to small boat operations. Mariners are warned to avoid transiting these waters if possible. If necessary to transit these waters, mariners are encouraged to use all counter-piracy measures and employ all best management practices.
